Reg Arnold discography...
Born in 1919 Reg Arnold was an extrovert trumpet player. A mainstay of the big bands he appeared on the bop scene right at the beginning, playing at the Melody Maker Jazz Rally in 1947. He adopted a Gillespian approach to his bop trumpet playing and would probably have developed into an exciting soloist in the new music.
He and Denis Rose both played on the classic 1948 "Jazz at the Town Hall" recording probably bop's first live recording. He also featured with Alan Dean's "All Star Sextet" in 1948 and at this stage was fast emerging as as an exciting soloist in the new bebop idiom.

At heart though he was still a swing trumpeter playing in the bop style. He was a big band man at heart and he left the bop scene to work with a number of name dance bands before joining Joe Loss from 1950 to 1955. He quit Joe Loss for a for a double comedy-musical act with ex-Loss vocalist Howard Jones. He enjoyed considerable success with Jones, briefly returning to the band scene, playing organ, to lead a small palais type group. He died prematurely at the age of forty three whilst again on a duo tour in Germany. He died from a heart attack pushing a car out of a snowdrift in January, 1963.

Having now heard recordings of the Stan Kenton big band and following discussions with his arranger and composer Ken Thorne, Vic Lewis formed his first big band in late 1946 to play music in the style of Stan Kenton. The music was very advanced for the time and led to the band being billed as "The music of Tomorrow by the band of Today". The band made it's debut on BBC Radio in November 1946. In December 1946 the band was recorded for the first time...
