Ian Carr...
Ian Carr was born in Dumfries, Scotland, in 1933 and although he played trumpet casually at school, Durham University and the Forces he did not devote himself seriously to music until 1960 when he had reached the age of 27. By then he had spent two years leading a nomadic existence in Europe whilst trying to decide on a career in keeping with his university achievements. On returning home in early 1960 he found his younger brother playing in a group called the EmCee Five, which at that time included a trumpeter whom the other four member considered insufficiently keen. For a year Ian devoted his life to practice, taking his first ever lessons and rehearsing with the group while earning his living as a teacher.
The EmCee Five enjoyed great popularity in the Newcastle area in 1960 but by late 1961, when they made the Columbia record, were virtually inactive and the break-up began. The group had made great strides in their short working life and had one outstanding soloist in Gary Cox. Malcolm Cecil, (whose initials the group were named after), and Ronnie Stephenson moved to London and Ian Carr followed in 1962.

Ian Carr c1965 After a stint with Harold McNair's group where he began to use the flugel horn, he was invited to join Don Rendell who was forming a new quintet. At the time he still had occasional technical problems but the group prospered and brought out Carr's latent qualities to the extent that this group is now regarded as the crowning achievement of Rendell's career.
His association with Don Rendell lasted until the Autumn of 1969 and produced a number of fine records as well as countless club performances. There was virtually no change in personnel over the five years and the band developed a united cohesive style using a lot of original material from the quintet itself. Carr and Rendell agreed to go their own separate ways in 1969 and eventually in the early 1970s Carr went into Jazz/Rock with 'Nucleus', outside the scope of this website. His later years were blighted by ill health and he died at the age of 75 in February, 2009.
