Michael Garrick...
Pianist, composer and arranger Michael Garrick was born in Enfield, Middlesex in 1933 and after two years service in the RAF attended the Ivor Mairants school of Dance Music in London. In 1958, he formed a quartet with vibes player Peter Shade. They performed at the Beaulie Jazz Festival in that year, and in early 1959 recorded four titles for Hep Records. The group then played a years residency at London's Marquee Club.
He led his own groups from the 1960s and provided music for a series of Jazz and Poetry concerts with Joe Harriott and Shake Keane as well as studying with Bill Evans and Stan Tracey.
From 1965 until 1969 Garrick was with the Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet and was now steadily moving away from the jazz of the past and began to compose choral and other more formal works.
He was active as a teacher throughout his career and became Director of Jazz Academy in 1989 organising vacation courses at the Royal Academy of Music and Regents College. Michael Garrick died at Harefield Hospital on November 11th, 2011 at the age of 78.

Garrick took a rest from recording through the 1980s and early 1990s but returned in the early 2000s with quartet and big band recordings. Full details are not included here.

Tony Brooks was incensed by the Daily Telegraph's obituary on Michael Garrick:
"They described his first band as "a frank imitation of the Modern Jazz Quartet". I assume that the miserable hack who wrote that had never heard the band, which had nothing in common with the MJQ apart from the instrumental line-up. The repertoire consisted mainly of Garrick originals, quite different from anything the MJQ ever did. I only ever heard them play two MJQ arrangements, one of which, Angel Eyes, was soon dropped in favour of a different version featuring the voice of Brian Barnes. That points up another big difference - the MJQ never featured vocals, whereas Garrick not only had a singing drummer, but two female singers. I have only vague memories of Iris Adele, but Josephine Stahl was something else - a tall, slender girl with a voice like Ella Fitzgerald and a fantastic ability to swing".

The live recording detailed below was made at London University in 1958 but was not released on record. In June, 2010 Gearbox Records issued a limited edition 12" LP titled Silhouette...
