Reed player Alan Barnes is a popular figure on the jazz club and festival scene. Playing mainly alto and baritone saxes he also plays tenor sax, clarinet, bass clarinet and flute. He is a versatile musician in most jazz styles but in the right setting he is an undoubted be-bopper.From 1983 to 1986 he was with drummer Tommy Chase's bepop styled quartet, followed by a long spell with Humphrey Lyttelton's mainstream group from 1988 to 1993 and has worked with many top names including Mike Westbrook, Kenny Baker, Don Weller as well as leading his own quartet and octet.
